The Nomes of Upper Egypt

Map of the Nomes of Upper Egypt
This map of ancient Egypt depicts Upper Egypt. Upper Egypt extended from the Libyan Desert south past Abu Simbel. The labelling of "upper" and "lower" seems counterintuitive, with Upper Egypt in the south and Lower Egypt in the north, but in fact relates to the Nile which flows from the highlands of East Africa (upstream) to the Mediterranean Sea (downstream). Upper Egypt was known as Ta-Shemau and was divided into twenty-two areas called Nomes.
Ta Shemau; Upper Egypt
The patron goddess of the Ancient Upper Egypt is Nekhbet, and so Lower Egypt can also be represented by a vulture. This goddess appears with Wadjet (of Lower Egypt) in the Pharaoh's "Nebty"name (also known as the "two ladies"). However, Upper Egypt was also associated with IsisHathorSekhmet and Set. Upper Egypt was associated with the lotus flower but was also represented by the sedge reed, which is referenced in the Pharaoh's Prenomen which begins with the epithet "he of the sedge and bee" (meaning he of Upper and Lower Egypt). The Pharaoh (and some of the gods) wore the White Crown ("hedjet") to display their guardianship of Upper Egypt. This crown was combined with the Red Crown of Lower Egypt to form the Double Crown ("pschent").
